If you’ve been following along this past month, then you know that we’ve been lucky to have Christopher Rico thoughtfully curating our mystical/mythical art inspired fashion series. This week Christopher picked Mattia Preti’s Saint John the Baptist Preaching, painted in 1665. Preti had a long and prolific career and relied on expressive backgrounds in his paintings much more than other painters of his time. Although underrated, many of his paintings are in major museums and important collections worldwide. It’s believed that his apprenticeship with the “Caravaggist” Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, sparked his lifelong interest in the style of Caravaggio.

Christopher: “I saw this painting some time in the early 90s when I was visiting friends in San Francisco and I think I became a painter that day. I’ve never been able to get this image out of my head, and compositionally I refer to it again and again in my work, especially the recent work.”

Mattias Preti’s exuberant late Baroque style easily translates into the vivid reds and blacks of the season, punctuated with hits of gold.

How do you feel about this painting?
And are you wearing red, black and/or gold this season?

Looks so dramatic and very much in the style of Caravaggio. Sure, red, gold and black seems such a sexy and glamorous combination.
